I love Singapore’s pride. I am yet to meet a Singaporean who doesn’t laud their country as ‘the best place in the world’. Locals will generally add, ‘and safe’ to this affirmation, closely followed by, ‘and clean!’. All of these attributes are definitely true, but what I really love is the friendly enthusiasm of the people. It’s infectious. And for an Australian, whose experience of gushing nationalism is limited, it’s rather endearing … read more
Myths, Legends & Langkawi
There’s a long running urban myth about a group of professional, partner-having, gym-going, hobby-pursuing, commitment-laden women friends. In this legend these lady friends finally come good on years of talking about going on a trip together. They clear their calendars for a week and meet on a little island to sip cocktails, lay in the sun and partake in a cultural adventure or two between massages. This is a myth, of course … read more
La la la Laos
I have to say this – when we arrived in Vang Vieng, Laos, after a five hour drive from Luang Prabang, I was completely underwhelmed. Luang Prabang, in Northern Laos was a divine little enclave of easy pace, cliffside temples, and handcrafted silver in picturesque night-markets. Lost & Dumbfound in London
I’ve been told a thousand times that London is overwhelming and amazing. Being overwhelmed by London is a cliche of the highest order. Hence, I decided in advance that I would not be part of it. No no, I decided that I would be excited to be in London, that I would appreciate everything about it and soak it all up without exception, but that I would not, under any circumstances, be overwhelmed. Far too passé. I made up my mind that I would skip the overwhelm entirely in favour of unfettered delight … read more
Stonehenge
Stonehenge is one of those places that had always inspired from me, a definitive ‘Ow, I’d love to see it’. Just the mention of it roused images of ancient Druid devotion and an excited little lump in my throat that seems to arise whenever I’m dealing with any Alleged Magic. ‘Mmmm’, I’d think, ‘If I did believe in magic, I’d believe that it happened somewhere like that for sure! … If I believed in that sort of thing.’ … read more
Angkor Wat
The thing is this: if you rewind almost exactly 10 years, to almost exactly the same Sunday morning, I was in Sydney, rolling out of a club in the city and literally bumping straight into a marathon that was going on there. In my state, it took me a while to work out what was going on. Once I realised that there was a foot race right in front of where I wanted to stumble, I was immediately annoyed in only the way that a self-centred, youth-and-clubbing-sort-of-fit, 22-year old can be. “Jesus” I slurred to my friends … read more
